A
Acid Value — A measure of the number of free acid groups in a chemical compound, expressed in milligrams of potassium hydroxide (KOH) required to neutralise one gram of the substance. Used as a quality indicator in resins, fats, oils, and waxes.
Active Ingredient (AI) — The component of a chemical formulation that provides the intended effect. In agrochemicals, the AI is the substance responsible for pest control or plant nutrition. In industrial products, it is the functional chemical as opposed to carriers, solvents, or stabilisers.
Adhesive Resin — A synthetic polymer used to bond substrates together. Common industrial types include urea-formaldehyde (UF), phenol-formaldehyde (PF), melamine-formaldehyde (MF), and epoxy resins. Major end-use markets include wood panel manufacturing, construction, automotive, and packaging.
Agrochemical — Any chemical product used in agriculture, including fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and plant growth regulators. The global agrochemical market is one of the largest end-use segments of the chemical industry.
Amino Resin — A class of thermosetting resins produced by the reaction of an amine (such as urea or melamine) with an aldehyde (typically formaldehyde). Used in wood adhesives, surface coatings, moulding compounds, and textile finishing.
Ammonium Nitrate (AN) — A white crystalline compound (NH₄NO₃) used primarily as a high-nitrogen fertiliser. Also used in explosives manufacturing. Subject to strict storage, handling, and security regulations in most jurisdictions due to safety and security concerns.
Assay — A quantitative analysis to determine the concentration or purity of a chemical substance. Assay results are typically reported as a percentage and form a key part of product specifications and Certificates of Analysis.
B
Batch Number (Lot Number) — A unique identifier assigned to a specific production run of a chemical product. Batch numbers enable traceability through the supply chain and are essential for quality control, recall management, and regulatory compliance.
Batch Processing — A manufacturing method in which chemicals are produced in discrete quantities (batches) rather than continuously. Common in contract and toll manufacturing where multiple products are made on the same equipment, with cleaning and changeover between production runs.
Bill of Lading (B/L) — A legal document issued by a carrier to a shipper, acknowledging receipt of goods for transport. In chemical trade, the bill of lading serves as a receipt, a contract of carriage, and — when negotiable — a document of title that can be used to transfer ownership of goods in transit.
Biocide — A chemical substance intended to destroy, deter, or control harmful organisms. Regulated under the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) in the UK and EU. Common types include disinfectants, preservatives, pest control products, and antifouling agents.
Blending — The physical mixing of two or more chemical components without a chemical reaction occurring. Distinguished from chemical synthesis. Blending produces formulated products such as cleaning solutions, coatings, lubricants, and fertiliser blends.
Brokerage — The activity of arranging chemical transactions between buyers and sellers without taking physical possession of the goods. Chemical brokers typically earn a commission and may also provide market intelligence, logistics coordination, and credit facilitation.
Bulk Chemical — A chemical produced or traded in large volumes, typically measured in tonnes. Examples include methanol, ethylene, formaldehyde, sulphuric acid, sodium hydroxide, chlorine, and ammonia. Also referred to as commodity chemicals.
C
Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) — A policy instrument that places a carbon price on imported goods based on the carbon emissions embedded in their production. The EU CBAM took effect in January 2026 and the UK version is scheduled for January 2027. Fertilisers are among the product categories covered, meaning imports from countries without equivalent carbon pricing face additional costs.
Catalyst — A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process. Industrial catalysts are critical in petrochemical, pharmaceutical, polymer, and environmental (emissions control) applications.
Certificate of Analysis (CofA) — A document issued by a manufacturer or testing laboratory that confirms a batch of chemical product meets its defined specifications. Typically includes test results for purity, concentration, pH, density, colour, and other relevant parameters.
Certificate of Origin (CoO) — A document certifying the country in which a chemical product was manufactured. Required for customs clearance and may affect tariff rates, trade preferences, and regulatory treatment in the importing country.
CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) — An Incoterm under which the seller delivers goods on board a vessel and pays the cost of freight and insurance to the named port of destination. The buyer assumes risk once goods are loaded. Commonly used in international bulk chemical trade.
CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) — The UK and EU regulation governing how chemical substances and mixtures are classified according to their hazards, labelled with appropriate warnings, and packaged for safe transport and use. Based on the UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS).
COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) — UK regulations that apply to establishments where dangerous substances are present above specified thresholds. COMAH sites must prepare safety reports, emergency plans, and demonstrate that all measures have been taken to prevent major accidents.
Commodity Chemical — See Bulk Chemical. A high-volume, standardised chemical product traded primarily on price and specification rather than brand or performance differentiation.
Condensation Reaction — A chemical reaction in which two molecules combine to form a larger molecule with the simultaneous loss of a small molecule, usually water. Fundamental to the production of polyester, nylon, amino resins, and many other industrial polymers.
Consignment Stock — Inventory held at a customer’s site but remaining the property of the supplier until consumed or withdrawn. Used in chemical supply chains to reduce the customer’s working capital requirements while ensuring security of supply.
Continuous Processing — A manufacturing method in which raw materials are fed into a reactor or process line continuously, and finished product is withdrawn without interruption. Typical for high-volume commodity chemicals such as formaldehyde, ammonia, ethylene, and sulphuric acid.
Contract Chemical Manufacturing — An arrangement in which a chemical company outsources the production of its products to a third-party manufacturer. The contract manufacturer typically sources raw materials, manages production, and handles quality control, while the customer retains ownership of the formulation and intellectual property. Distinguished from toll manufacturing, where the customer supplies the raw materials. See also Toll Manufacturing.
Controlled Release Fertiliser (CRF) — A fertiliser formulation designed to release nutrients gradually over an extended period, typically using polymer coatings or chemical mechanisms to regulate nutrient availability. Used in agriculture, horticulture, and amenity turf management.
Curing — The process by which a chemical formulation (typically a resin, adhesive, or coating) undergoes an irreversible chemical change — often cross-linking — to reach its final, hardened state. Curing may be triggered by heat, chemical catalysts, moisture, or UV radiation.
D
Dangerous Goods — Substances or articles that pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment during transport. Chemical dangerous goods are classified into nine classes under the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, covering explosives, gases, flammable liquids, toxic substances, corrosives, and more.
Demurrage — A charge levied when a vessel, railcar, or tanker is detained beyond the agreed period for loading or unloading. In bulk chemical logistics, demurrage charges can be significant, particularly for ship-to-shore transfers at port terminals.
Distillation — A separation process in which a liquid mixture is heated to produce vapour, which is then condensed to produce a purified product. Widely used in petrochemical refining, solvent recovery, and the purification of chemical intermediates.
Distributor — A company that purchases chemical products from manufacturers and resells them to end users, often providing additional services such as storage, repackaging, blending, technical support, and regulatory compliance. Distributors play a critical role in the chemical supply chain, particularly for small and medium-volume customers.
Downstream — Refers to processes or products that are further along the value chain from raw material extraction. Downstream chemical production converts intermediates into finished products such as plastics, coatings, adhesives, and agrochemicals. See also Upstream.
Drum — A standard shipping container for chemicals, typically 200–210 litres (approximately 55 US gallons) in capacity. Available in steel, plastic (HDPE), and fibre variants depending on the product being shipped. Drums remain one of the most common packaging formats for specialty and mid-volume chemicals.
E
Emulsion — A stable mixture of two immiscible liquids (typically oil and water) in which one is dispersed as fine droplets within the other. Emulsion technology underpins products including paints, adhesives, agricultural sprays, personal care products, and bitumen applications.
Ethylene — A gaseous hydrocarbon (C₂H₄) and the most widely produced organic compound globally. Ethylene is the primary building block for polyethylene, PVC, ethylene oxide, styrene, and numerous other chemical derivatives. Production is concentrated at large-scale steam crackers.
Ex Works (EXW) — An Incoterm under which the seller makes goods available at their premises, and the buyer assumes all costs and risks of transport from that point. In chemical trade, EXW pricing excludes freight, insurance, and loading costs.
Exothermic Reaction — A chemical reaction that releases heat. Many industrial chemical reactions are exothermic, requiring careful temperature control and cooling systems to maintain safe operating conditions and product quality.
F
Feedstock — The raw material input to a chemical manufacturing process. Natural gas, crude oil fractions (naphtha, ethane), coal, and biomass are common feedstocks. Feedstock costs typically represent the largest variable cost in commodity chemical production and are a primary driver of product pricing.
Fine Chemical — A chemical substance produced in relatively small quantities and to high specifications, typically for use in pharmaceuticals, electronics, flavours and fragrances, or advanced materials. Distinguished from bulk/commodity chemicals by volume, purity, price, and the complexity of manufacture.
Flash Point — The lowest temperature at which a chemical gives off sufficient vapour to form an ignitable mixture with air near its surface. Flash point is a key safety parameter that determines storage, handling, and transport classifications for flammable liquids.
FOB (Free on Board) — An Incoterm under which the seller delivers goods on board a vessel at the named port of shipment. Risk transfers to the buyer once the goods are on board. Widely used in international chemical commodity trade alongside CIF.
Formaldehyde — A colourless, pungent gas (CH₂O) typically supplied as an aqueous solution (formalin) at concentrations between 24% and 55%. One of the most widely used chemical intermediates globally, serving as a building block for resins, adhesives, biocides, and industrial chemicals.
Formulation — The process of combining active ingredients with other components (solvents, carriers, stabilisers, surfactants) to create a finished product with specific performance characteristics. Also refers to the recipe or specification of such a product.
Futures Contract — A standardised agreement to buy or sell a commodity (including certain chemicals) at a predetermined price at a specified future date. Chemical futures are traded for products including methanol, ethylene, propylene, and benzene, and are used for price hedging and risk management.
G
GHS (Globally Harmonized System) — An international framework developed by the United Nations for the classification and labelling of chemicals. GHS provides standardised hazard pictograms, signal words, and hazard and precautionary statements to ensure consistent communication of chemical hazards across international supply chains.
Glass-Lined Reactor — A chemical reactor with an interior surface coated in borosilicate glass, providing resistance to corrosion from acids, alkalis, and other aggressive chemicals. Used for high-purity or corrosive processes where stainless steel or carbon steel would be unsuitable.
GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) — A set of quality management principles ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled to the quality standards appropriate to their intended use. GMP is mandatory in pharmaceutical manufacturing and increasingly expected in food-grade and cosmetic chemical production.
H
Hardener — A chemical agent added to a resin system to initiate or accelerate curing (cross-linking). Common in epoxy, polyester, and amino resin systems. Also known as a curing agent or crosslinker.
Harmonised System (HS) Code — A standardised international numerical system for classifying traded products, administered by the World Customs Organization. HS codes are used globally for customs declarations, tariff determination, and trade statistics. Chemical products are classified primarily under Chapters 28–38 of the HS.
Hazardous Substance — Any chemical substance that poses a risk to human health, safety, or the environment. Classification is governed by CLP regulations in the UK and EU, and determines labelling, packaging, storage, transport, and handling requirements.
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) — A thermoplastic polymer produced from ethylene, characterised by high strength-to-density ratio. Used in packaging (bottles, drums, IBCs), piping, geomembranes, and industrial containers. One of the highest-volume plastics produced globally.
Hydrolysis — A chemical reaction in which water breaks down a compound into simpler substances. Hydrolysis is both a useful industrial process (e.g. saponification in soap manufacture) and a degradation mechanism that must be managed during storage and transport of moisture-sensitive chemicals.
I
IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) — A reusable container, typically 1,000 litres capacity, used for the transport and storage of bulk liquids and granular chemicals. IBCs sit between drums (200L) and road tankers in the packaging hierarchy and are a standard format in the industrial chemicals supply chain.
Incoterms — A set of internationally recognised trade terms published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) that define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in the delivery of goods. Key Incoterms in chemical trade include EXW, FOB, CIF, DAP, and DDP. The current edition is Incoterms® 2020.
Inhibitor — A chemical that slows or prevents a specific reaction. Nitrification inhibitors slow the conversion of ammonium to nitrate in soil. Corrosion inhibitors protect metal surfaces. Polymerisation inhibitors prevent premature curing during storage and transport of reactive chemicals.
Intermediate — A chemical substance produced during one stage of a manufacturing process and consumed in a subsequent stage. Intermediates are not final products but essential building blocks — for example, ethylene oxide is an intermediate in the production of ethylene glycol.
ISO Tank Container — A standardised stainless steel tank fitted within an ISO-standard frame, used for the international transport of bulk liquid chemicals by road, rail, and sea. Typical capacity is 20,000–26,000 litres. ISO tanks offer a cost-effective and intermodal alternative to drums and IBCs for medium-volume international shipments.
L
LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) — A thermoplastic polymer characterised by its flexibility and transparency. Used in packaging films, bags, coatings, and containers. Distinguished from HDPE by its lower density and branched molecular structure.
Letter of Credit (L/C) — A financial instrument issued by a bank guaranteeing that a buyer’s payment to a seller will be received on time and for the correct amount. Letters of credit are widely used in international chemical trade to mitigate payment risk, particularly with new trading partners or in high-value transactions.
M
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) — See Safety Data Sheet (SDS). MSDS is the legacy term still used in some jurisdictions, largely replaced by SDS under GHS-aligned regulations.
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) — An engineered wood product made by breaking down wood residuals into fibres, combining them with a resin binder (typically urea-formaldehyde), and forming panels under heat and pressure. One of the largest end-use markets for amino resin adhesives.
Melamine — An organic compound (C₃H₆N₆) used primarily in the production of melamine-formaldehyde resins, which provide superior moisture and heat resistance compared to urea-formaldehyde systems. Used in surface coatings, laminates, decorative panels, and flame-retardant applications.
Methanol — The simplest alcohol (CH₃OH), produced industrially from natural gas via synthesis gas. Used as a feedstock for formaldehyde production, as a solvent, as a fuel additive, and increasingly as an alternative marine fuel. One of the highest-volume bulk chemicals traded globally.
Methylene Urea (MU) — A slow release nitrogen compound formed by the reaction of urea with formaldehyde. Releases nitrogen through a multi-stage process involving hydrolysis and soil microbial activity, providing sustained plant nutrition over 4–12 weeks depending on formulation and conditions.
Monomer — A small molecule that can be chemically bonded to other monomers to form a polymer. Common industrial monomers include ethylene, propylene, styrene, vinyl chloride, and methyl methacrylate.
N
Naphtha — A light petroleum fraction obtained from crude oil distillation, used primarily as a feedstock for steam crackers in the production of ethylene, propylene, and other olefins. Naphtha pricing is a key cost driver for the European and Asian petrochemical industries.
Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) — A measure of how effectively applied nitrogen fertiliser is taken up by crops, expressed as a percentage or ratio. Improving NUE is a key objective for the global fertiliser industry and agricultural policy, driven by both economic and environmental considerations.
Nitrification Inhibitor — A chemical additive that slows the microbial conversion of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen in soil, reducing the risk of nitrogen leaching and nitrous oxide emissions.
NPK — Abbreviation for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) — the three primary macronutrients required for plant growth. NPK ratios are used universally to describe fertiliser composition (e.g. 20-10-10 denotes 20% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, 10% potassium).
O
Olefin — An unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon-carbon double bond. The major industrial olefins — ethylene, propylene, and butadiene — are the primary building blocks of the petrochemical industry, produced by steam cracking of naphtha or ethane.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) — In the chemical industry context, a company that incorporates chemical products (adhesives, coatings, sealants, lubricants) into its own manufactured goods. OEM specifications often dictate the quality and performance requirements that chemical suppliers must meet.
P
Paraformaldehyde — A solid polymer of formaldehyde, typically supplied as a white powder or prills at 82–97% purity. Used where a concentrated, stable source of formaldehyde is required — particularly in resin manufacture, agrochemicals, and biocide production.
Petrochemical — A chemical product derived from petroleum or natural gas. Petrochemicals include olefins (ethylene, propylene), aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylene), and their derivatives. The petrochemical sector is the largest segment of the global chemical industry by volume.
Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin (PF) — A thermosetting resin produced by the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. Known for excellent moisture resistance and durability, PF resins are used in exterior-grade plywood, structural timber products, insulation, brake linings, and foundry applications.
Pilot Scale — Production at an intermediate scale between laboratory and full commercial manufacturing. Pilot-scale production is used to validate processes, optimise parameters, and generate product samples before committing to full-scale capital investment.
Polymer — A large molecule composed of repeating structural units (monomers) linked by chemical bonds. Industrial polymers include plastics (polyethylene, PVC, polypropylene), resins (epoxy, polyester, amino), elastomers (rubber, silicone), and fibres (nylon, polyester).
Pot Life — The working time available after a multi-component chemical system (such as a resin and hardener) has been mixed, before it begins to cure and becomes unusable. A critical parameter in adhesive, coating, and composite manufacturing.
Price Index — A benchmark measure tracking the price movement of a chemical commodity over time. Price indices for chemicals are published by organisations such as ICIS, Platts, and Argus Media, and are used for contract pricing, market analysis, and hedging decisions.
Q
Quality Assurance (QA) — The systematic process of ensuring that manufactured chemical products meet specified standards and regulatory requirements. QA encompasses raw material testing, in-process monitoring, finished product analysis, and documentation including Certificates of Analysis.
Quarantine — In chemical manufacturing and distribution, the practice of holding a batch of product in a restricted status pending completion of quality testing and release. Quarantined product may not be shipped or used until it has been formally approved by quality control.
R
Reactor — A vessel in which chemical reactions are carried out under controlled conditions of temperature, pressure, and mixing. Industrial reactors range from small pilot-scale vessels (under 1m³) to large production units (30m³ and above). Reactor materials — stainless steel, glass-lined, Hastelloy, or other alloys — are selected based on the chemistry being processed.
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) — The chemical regulation framework in the UK (UK REACH) and EU (EU REACH), requiring manufacturers and importers to register chemical substances, evaluate their risks, and obtain authorisation for substances of very high concern. Compliance is a prerequisite for placing chemicals on the market.
Resin — A broad term for viscous substances that harden into solid or semi-solid materials. In industrial chemistry, resins are typically synthetic polymers (epoxy, polyester, amino, alkyd, polyurethane) used as adhesives, coatings, binders, and matrix materials for composites.
S
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — A standardised 16-section document providing comprehensive information on the properties of a chemical substance or mixture, including hazard identification, composition, first aid measures, fire-fighting measures, handling and storage, exposure controls, and regulatory status. Legally required for all hazardous substances supplied in the UK and EU.
Scale-Up — The process of increasing production from laboratory or pilot scale to full commercial manufacturing. Scale-up is a critical and often underestimated phase in chemical product development, as reaction kinetics, heat transfer, and mixing behaviour can change significantly at larger volumes.
Slow Release Fertiliser (SRF) — A fertiliser designed to release nutrients gradually over an extended period, reducing application frequency and minimising nutrient losses to the environment. Mechanisms include polymer coatings, chemical inhibitors, and condensation chemistry such as methylene urea.
Solvent — A liquid substance capable of dissolving other materials. Industrial solvents include methanol, acetone, toluene, ethanol, isopropanol, and various petroleum-derived products. Used in chemical manufacturing, coatings, cleaning, extraction, and pharmaceutical processes.
Specialty Chemical — A chemical product sold on the basis of its performance or function rather than its composition alone. Specialty chemicals are typically produced in smaller volumes and at higher margins than commodity chemicals. Examples include adhesives, catalysts, electronic chemicals, surfactants, and agricultural adjuvants.
Spot Market — The market for immediate purchase and delivery of chemical products, as opposed to forward contracts or long-term supply agreements. Spot prices are typically more volatile than contract prices and reflect current supply-demand conditions.
Steam Cracker — A large-scale industrial plant that thermally cracks hydrocarbon feedstocks (naphtha, ethane, propane) at high temperatures to produce olefins (ethylene, propylene) and other petrochemical building blocks. Steam crackers are among the largest and most capital-intensive units in the chemical industry.
Sulphuric Acid — A highly corrosive strong acid (H₂SO₄) and one of the most widely produced industrial chemicals globally. Used in fertiliser production, petroleum refining, metal processing, chemical synthesis, and water treatment. Historically cited as a proxy indicator of a nation’s industrial output.
Supply Chain — The complete network of organisations, activities, resources, and technologies involved in moving a chemical product from raw material extraction through manufacturing, distribution, and delivery to the end user.
Surfactant — A substance that reduces the surface tension between two liquids, a liquid and a gas, or a liquid and a solid. Surfactants are key ingredients in detergents, emulsifiers, dispersants, foaming agents, and wetting agents across the chemical, agrochemical, personal care, and oilfield sectors.
Synthesis — The production of a chemical compound through one or more chemical reactions, as opposed to physical processes such as blending or distillation. Chemical synthesis is the core manufacturing activity in both commodity and specialty chemical production.
T
Tank Farm — A facility consisting of multiple storage tanks used for the bulk storage of liquid chemicals, petroleum products, or gases. Tank farms are typically located at manufacturing sites, port terminals, and distribution hubs, and are subject to environmental and safety regulations including bunding, leak detection, and vapour recovery requirements.
Tariff — A tax imposed by a government on imported goods. Chemical tariffs vary by product, origin, and trade agreement status. Tariff schedules are based on HS codes and can significantly affect the economics of international chemical trade, particularly for commodity products with tight margins.
Thermoplastic — A polymer that softens when heated and hardens when cooled, allowing it to be reshaped repeatedly. Common thermoplastics include polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene, PET, and nylon.
Thermoset — A polymer that undergoes an irreversible chemical change (cross-linking) during curing, creating a rigid structure that cannot be remelted. Examples include epoxy, phenolic, amino, and polyester resins. Used in adhesives, electrical insulation, composites, and protective coatings.
Toll Manufacturing — A manufacturing arrangement in which a customer provides raw materials to a third-party manufacturer, who processes them into finished product using their own facilities and equipment. Tonne (Metric Ton) — The standard unit of mass in international chemical trade, equal to 1,000 kilograms (approximately 2,205 pounds). Chemical production volumes and trade statistics are typically reported in tonnes, kilotonnes (kt), or megatonnes (Mt).
Traceability — The ability to track a chemical product through all stages of its supply chain — from raw material sourcing through manufacturing, distribution, and end use. Traceability is essential for quality management, regulatory compliance, and recall procedures.
U
Upstream — Refers to processes or operations at the beginning of the value chain — raw material extraction, primary processing, and the production of basic chemical intermediates. Upstream operations are typically capital-intensive and closely linked to energy and commodity prices. See also Downstream.
Urea — An organic compound (CO(NH₂)₂) produced industrially from ammonia and carbon dioxide. The most widely used nitrogen fertiliser globally, also serving as a feedstock for resin production, animal feed supplements, and diesel exhaust fluid (AdBlue/DEF).
Urea-Formaldehyde Resin (UF) — A thermosetting amino resin produced by the condensation reaction of urea with formaldehyde. The most widely used wood adhesive globally, applied in the manufacture of particleboard, MDF, plywood, and other engineered wood products.
Urease Inhibitor — A chemical compound that slows the activity of the urease enzyme in soil, reducing the rate at which urea fertiliser is converted to ammonia and thereby decreasing nitrogen losses through volatilisation.

Value Chain — The full range of activities and processes required to bring a chemical product from raw material extraction through production, distribution, and delivery to the end user. Value chain analysis is used to identify cost drivers, competitive advantages, and opportunities for integration or outsourcing.
Viscosity — A measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is a critical quality parameter for resins, adhesives, coatings, lubricants, and liquid chemical products, affecting both processing behaviour and end-use performance. Typically measured in centipoise (cP) or millipascal-seconds (mPa·s).
Volatilisation — The process by which a substance is converted from a liquid or solid state into a gas or vapour. In agriculture, nitrogen volatilisation from surface-applied urea is a significant source of nutrient waste and atmospheric ammonia pollution.
VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) — An organic chemical that readily evaporates at room temperature. VOC emissions from chemical manufacturing, coatings, solvents, and consumer products are regulated due to their role in air pollution and the formation of ground-level ozone.

Warehouse Receipt — A document issued by a warehouse operator confirming the quantity and condition of goods held in storage. In chemical trade, warehouse receipts may serve as collateral for financing and can be used to transfer ownership of stored product.
Wood Adhesive — A bonding agent used in the manufacture of engineered wood products including plywood, particleboard, MDF, laminated timber, and structural glulam. The majority of industrial wood adhesives are formaldehyde-based resins, though polyurethane and emulsion polymer alternatives are used in specific applications.

Xylene — An aromatic hydrocarbon (C₈H₁₀) produced from petroleum, existing in three isomeric forms: ortho-, meta-, and para-xylene. Para-xylene is the most commercially significant isomer, used as a feedstock for PET (polyethylene terephthalate) production. Xylene is also widely used as an industrial solvent.
