A policy instrument that applies a carbon price to imported goods based on the emissions embedded in their production. The EU CBAM covers fertilisers from January 2026, and the UK version is expected from January 2027. CBAM is designed to prevent carbon leakage and will affect the cost of imported nitrogen fertilisers produced using carbon-intensive processes.
