The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen gas (N₂) into plant-available forms. Biological nitrogen fixation is carried out by bacteria, notably Rhizobium species in symbiosis with leguminous plants (clover, peas, beans). Industrial nitrogen fixation via the Haber-Bosch process is the basis of synthetic fertiliser production.
