Natural gas (predominantly methane) that has been cooled to approximately −162°C (−260°F), at which point it becomes a liquid occupying approximately 1/600th of its gaseous volume. Liquefaction enables the transport of natural gas by ship to markets not accessible by pipeline. The global LNG market has grown rapidly, with major exporting nations including Qatar, Australia, the United States, and Russia.
