UAN (Urea Ammonium Nitrate)

A liquid nitrogen fertiliser produced by dissolving urea and ammonium nitrate in water. Available in several concentrations (typically 28%, 30%, or 32% nitrogen). UAN is widely used in arable agriculture, applied via boom sprayers or dribble bars, and can be mixed with crop protection products in some circumstances.

Variable Rate Application (VRA)

The adjustment of fertiliser application rate across a field based on spatial data (soil analysis maps, yield maps, crop sensor data, or satellite imagery). VRA is a core component of precision agriculture, enabling nutrient input to be matched to localised crop demand.

Water Soluble Fertiliser

A fertiliser that dissolves completely in water, suitable for application through irrigation systems (fertigation), foliar spraying, or hydroponics. Water soluble fertilisers provide immediately available nutrients and are widely used in protected cropping and high-value horticultural production.

Slurry

A liquid mixture of livestock manure and water, collected from housed cattle or pig systems. Slurry contains significant quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and is applied to land as an organic fertiliser. Storage, timing, and application method are regulated to minimise environmental impact.

Slow Release Fertiliser (SRF)

A fertiliser in which nutrient release is delayed or extended relative to a conventional soluble product. The release mechanism may involve low-solubility chemical compounds (such as methylene urea), coatings (polymer or sulphur), or organic materials that require microbial decomposition. Soil Analysis (Soil Test)

Laboratory analysis of a soil sample to determine nutrient status (P, K, Mg, pH, and sometimes micronutrients), organic matter content, and other parameters relevant to fertiliser planning. Regular soil analysis underpins efficient nutrient management.

Urea

An organic nitrogen compound (CO(NH₂)₂) containing 46% nitrogen — the highest concentration of any solid nitrogen fertiliser. Produced industrially from ammonia and carbon dioxide. Applied as a granular or prilled product, or dissolved to make UAN liquid fertiliser. Urea is subject to volatilisation losses (ammonia escape) when surface-applied, particularly in warm or alkaline conditions.

SOP (Sulphate of Potash)

Potassium sulphate (K₂SO₄), a premium potassium fertiliser providing both potassium (50% K₂O) and sulphur (18% S) without chloride. Preferred for chloride-sensitive crops and high-value applications.

Urease Inhibitor

A chemical additive that slows the activity of the urease enzyme in soil, reducing the rate at which urea is hydrolysed to ammonia. This decreases nitrogen losses through volatilisation, particularly when urea-based fertilisers are surface-applied without incorporation. NBPT (N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide) is the most widely used urease inhibitor globally.
