Zinc (Zn)

An essential micronutrient involved in enzyme function, protein synthesis, and growth regulation in plants. Zinc deficiency is one of the most widespread micronutrient problems globally, particularly on calcareous, sandy, or heavily cropped soils. Applied as zinc sulphate, zinc oxide, or chelated zinc in both soil and foliar products.

Superphosphate

A phosphate fertiliser produced by treating phosphate rock with sulphuric acid. Single superphosphate (SSP) contains approximately 18–20% P₂O₅ plus sulphur and calcium. Triple superphosphate (TSP) contains approximately 46% P₂O₅. Superphosphates are among the oldest manufactured fertilisers.

Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI)

An English agri-environment scheme, part of the post-Brexit Environmental Land Management framework, that pays farmers for adopting sustainable farming practices. SFI actions relevant to fertiliser use include nutrient management planning, soil health improvement, and integrated pest management.

Tissue Analysis (Plant Tissue Testing)

Laboratory analysis of plant leaf or sap samples to assess nutrient status during the growing season. Tissue analysis complements soil testing and can identify hidden deficiencies before visual symptoms appear, allowing corrective foliar or soil applications.

Top Dressing

A fertiliser application made to a growing crop, typically a nitrogen application to cereals, grassland, or vegetables during the active growth period. Top dressings are usually broadcast onto the soil surface or applied as a liquid spray.

TSP (Triple Superphosphate)

A concentrated phosphate fertiliser (0-46-0) produced by treating phosphate rock with phosphoric acid. Contains approximately 46% P₂O₅ with no nitrogen or potassium.

UAN (Urea Ammonium Nitrate)

A liquid nitrogen fertiliser produced by dissolving urea and ammonium nitrate in water. Available in several concentrations (typically 28%, 30%, or 32% nitrogen). UAN is widely used in arable agriculture, applied via boom sprayers or dribble bars, and can be mixed with crop protection products in some circumstances.

Variable Rate Application (VRA)

The adjustment of fertiliser application rate across a field based on spatial data (soil analysis maps, yield maps, crop sensor data, or satellite imagery). VRA is a core component of precision agriculture, enabling nutrient input to be matched to localised crop demand.

Water Soluble Fertiliser

A fertiliser that dissolves completely in water, suitable for application through irrigation systems (fertigation), foliar spraying, or hydroponics. Water soluble fertilisers provide immediately available nutrients and are widely used in protected cropping and high-value horticultural production.
