A measure of the density of petroleum liquids relative to water, developed by the American Petroleum Institute. Measured on an inverted scale: higher API gravity indicates lighter crude oil. Light crudes (above 31° API) are generally more valuable as they yield a greater proportion of high-value products such as gasoline and diesel.
